The Evolution of SIM Technology: From Physical to Digital

The evolution of SIM technology has come a long way, transitioning from physical to digital over the years. In the past, SIM cards were physical chips that needed to be inserted into mobile devices to connect to a network. These physical SIM cards were limited in terms of flexibility and required manual handling for activation and storage of data. However, with advancements in technology, digital SIMs have emerged, revolutionizing the way we connect and communicate.

Digital SIMs, also known as eSIMs, are embedded directly into mobile devices and do not require physical insertion or removal. Instead, they are downloaded and activated remotely, eliminating the need for traditional SIM cards. This shift has opened up a world of possibilities, allowing for easier device integration, enhanced flexibility, and improved connectivity. With digital SIM technology, users can switch between mobile operators seamlessly, making it more convenient for travelers and those in areas with limited network coverage. Overall, the transition from physical to digital SIM technology has transformed the way we experience connectivity and paved the way for further advancements in the telecommunications industry.

Understanding Digital SIM: How It Works and Its Advantages

Digital SIM, also known as embedded SIM or eSIM, is a technology that is revolutionizing the way we use and connect devices. Unlike traditional physical SIM cards that need to be physically inserted and removed from devices, digital SIM is built directly into devices, enabling seamless connectivity and flexibility. This technology works by storing SIM information electronically, allowing users to easily switch between mobile network operators without the need for a physical SIM card.

One of the key advantages of digital SIM is its convenience. With traditional SIM cards, users need to visit a physical store to purchase and activate a new SIM card when switching operators. This process can be time-consuming and inconvenient, especially for frequent travelers or those who frequently switch between operators. Digital SIM eliminates the need for physical SIM cards, simplifying the process of switching providers. Users can simply select a new network operator through their device settings, saving time and effort. Additionally, digital SIM technology allows for the remote provisioning of SIM profiles, saving users the hassle of visiting a store for SIM card replacements or upgrades. This streamlined process enhances user experience and provides greater flexibility in managing connectivity.

How can I reinstall a deleted eSIM or reinstall an existing eSIM in my new phone?

If you delete your eSIM from YOverse or lose your device, you cannot reinstall it, so if you plan to buy another plan at a later date, you will need to pay the activation fee of $0.70 Euro (which covers your eSIM for 1 year) again and reinstall a new eSIM.

How can I delete an eSIM from my phone?

If you wish, you can manually remove your eSIM. To remove your eSIM follow these steps:

Go to Settings

  • Tap Mobile data or Mobile data

    • Tap your mobile plan

    • Tap “Remove mobile plan”

If you remove your eSIM you will no longer be able to connect through this line. Any contacts you have associated with this line will default to your preferred line.

How can I allow data switching between my plans? [Advanced users]

To allow your phone to automatically select which SIM to use data from based on coverage and availability, turn on “Allow mobile data switching” in your settings. Note that if you are roaming and only want to use your YOverse eSIM or data, you should then make sure that “Allow mobile data switching” is turned off. If “Allow mobile data switching” is turned on, your phone will automatically use data from both phone plans, depending on which network is strongest at any given moment. This option is best for people who want to stay connected no matter what. There is no way to know which plan is being used at any given time, however, so this option can consume data quickly if you are not aware of it. To turn on Allow mobile data switching, follow these steps (steps may vary depending on phone model):

  • Go to Settings

  • Tap either Cellular or Mobile Data.

  • Tap Mobile Data.

    • Turn on Allow Mobile Data Switching

Your data line automatically switches for the duration of your call. Mobile data switching will not work if you are currently roaming and both eSIMs are not set to allow data roaming. Check with your provider for availability and to find out if additional charges apply.

How do I see how much data is left on my plan?

You are able to see it in the application in the “My eSIM” bubble; click on the data plan under “Active Data Plans” to view its remaining data. Once your data runs out, you will no longer have an internet connection without Wi-Fi.
